The Health Benefits of Apples

Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away? What are the benefits of including apples in our diet?

One medium apple provides 95 calories, 25 grams of carbohydrate (with 19 grams of naturally occurring sugar), 3 grams of dietary fiber and 0 grams of fat.

Apples are great sources of fiber, phytochemicals, and vitamin C.  To serve as a source of fiber, it is best to eat apples with the peel on. Apples provide both insoluble and soluble fiber. These fiber sources help to prevent constipation and have a modest effect on lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol.

One phytochemical found in apples in Quercetin. Quercetin is a naturally occurring plant-based chemical that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Apples serve as a healthy snack.  Consider apple slices with peanut butter or apple slices with cheddar cheese.  A baked apple is a healthy, delicious dessert alternative. If you have extra apples, consider making homemade applesauce.
